Service-Oriented Architecture Portal

The Problem

Our client had a health care provider system that provided, among other things, Deductible, Copay, Coordination of Benefits and Claims information to health care providers. They wanted to provide the same information to its plan members, but the original system had been coded as a monolithic application, so it was not possible to deliver independent functions to the members.

The goal of the project was to re-write a number of features as stand-alone applications running on top of a set of new Common Services. These applications had to run in our client's secure portal environment

Our Responsibilities

The Jonah Group was engaged as a system integrator on a fixed-price basis. We managed all development resources, took full responsibility for delivery of the system and assumed all risk for cost overruns. We supplied a technical architect, project manager, developers, a QA analyst, and a business analayst (part time). The following were our responsiblities.

  • Discovery
  • Project Management
  • Technical Architecture / Design
  • User Interface Design
  • Test Case Development
  • Construction
  • Unit Testing (Including Automated JUnit Tests)
  • Support for Performance Testing
  • Support for User Acceptance Testing
  • Transition Support
  • Warranty Support

Unique Challenges, Solved.

  • This project was designed as a pilot for SOA technologies within our client's technology environment. It paved the way for a larger program of common service offerings.
  • By expanding our client's self-service capabilities to plan members and reducing reliance on live servicing and manual work, Jonah met all of the business goals for this project.
  • The Jonah Group implemented a custom security manager for this application. The authorization requirements were drastically different from the providers supported by the provider application. The Jonah Group recommended a service-based authorization function but our client was not ready to deploy this capability because the SOA was in a pilot phase. The Jonah Group developed reusable service delegate and security manager components that implemented the authentication and authorization checks on each call to a service or EJB.
  • The system went through a performance test before moving to production to ensure that it would support the projected service levels. The Jonah Group worked with our client's business team to develop a performance model that projected the throughput, bandwidth and response time requirements during the first year of operation.
