Performance Tuning - Post Office Desktop

The Problem

Fujitsu requested that Jonah conduct a performance review, provide suggestions and best practices for improvement of the performance, and to fix the memory leaks that were showstoppers for their client.

Our Responsibilities

  • Performance review
  • Mentoring in the techniques of performance analyis
  • Plugging memory leaks
  • Report and recommendations

The Solution

Jonah allocated a senior architect to perform the review. A presentation on "Java Performance" was given, with an emphasis on performance in Swing applications. Directions for finding and measuring the causes of bottlenecks were discussed with the staff. They were also introduced to the JProbe performance optimization tool, and best practices for its use.

Our architect then engaged a few members of the senior development staff individually, to drive out the main performance bottlenecks in the application. By way of demonstration, the techniques discussed in the presentation were applied to known performance problems. As a result of these investigations, a number of problematic code sections were isolated, and strategies were suggested in each case for either improving the performance or removing memory leaks. These finding were all documented in a report, delivered to the team lead and senior manager at the end of the week.

Four days were spent collecting raw performance data for the three main transaction bottlenecks in the system. During the analysis, the team used the the following tools and technologies:

Unique Challenges, Solved.

  • The client's development team was empowered with techniques for investigating and fixing performance bottlenecks and memory leaks.
  • Management was so impressed with the report that Jonah was invited back the following week to continue mentoring staff, and to help fix other memory leaks in the application.
  • During the 2nd week, four major memory leaks were identified and resolved by Jonah, allowing the application to successfully pass through UAT.
