Smalltalk - Requiem or Resurgence?
(also available online at Doctor Dobb's Portal)
THE AUGUST 1978 ISSUE of Byte Magazine had a language feature that included a small picture of the "Land Of Small Talk", perched on a tower amid Fortran Ocean, to the south of Pascal's Triangle, North of Lisp Jungle, and East of the Basic Sea. The following text, associated with a description of the language, uncannily describes the state of Smalltalk both past and present.
The Jonah Software Development Method
THE MOST DIFFICULT PART of any software project is developing a shared understanding of the functions of the application. Programmers need to understand the business rationale for building a function so they can implement the best possible solution. Business stakeholders need to understand what the programmers intend to build so they can make informed decisions about the costs and benefits of the application. The Jonah Group's method is aimed at developing a shared understanding early in the project's lifecycle and revising it as new information becomes available.
Distributed Object Graph Traversal, Preparation and Transport
(also available online at DeveloperWorks)
ALL DISTRIBUTED APPLICATIONS require some protocol for the transport of data between communicating processes. The nature of the application determines the extent to which the efficiency of the protocol is favored over its ease of use. Typically, the data in which the client software is interested resides on the server in the form of business objects. Protocols that allow the developer to interact with these high-level objects, rather than the underlying attributes/relationships of which they are comprised, are generally favored.
